Whether you're working on a construction site, landscaping a garden, or estimating excavation work, knowing how much dirt you have is essential. Our Dirt Pile Calculator helps you quickly determine the volume and weight of a dirt pile based on its shape and dimensions.

You can choose between three shapes:

  • 📦 Rectangular Pile
  • 🍦 Conical Pile
  • 🔺 Triangular Prism Pile

Let’s go over how each shape is calculated.

Formula for calculate Volume and Weight

1. Rectangular Dirt Pile

Formula for Volume:

Volume=Length×Width×Height\text{Volume} = \text{Length} \times \text{Width} \times \text{Height}Volume=Length×Width×Height

Formula for Weight:

Weight=Volume×Density\text{Weight} = \text{Volume} \times \text{Density}Weight=Volume×Density

2. Conical Dirt Pile

Formula for Volume:

Volume=13πr2h\text{Volume} = \frac{1}{3} \pi r^2 hVolume=31πr2h

Where:

  • rrr = Radius of the base
  • hhh = Height of the cone
  • π≈3.1416\pi \approx 3.1416π≈3.1416

Formula for Weight:

Weight=Volume×Density\text{Weight} = \text{Volume} \times \text{Density}Weight=Volume×Density

3. Triangular Prism Dirt Pile

Formula for Volume:

Volume=12×Base Length×Triangle Height×Prism Length\text{Volume} = \frac{1}{2} \times \text{Base Length} \times \text{Triangle Height} \times \text{Prism Length}Volume=21×Base Length×Triangle Height×Prism Length

Formula for Weight:

Weight=Volume×Density\text{Weight} = \text{Volume} \times \text{Density}Weight=Volume×Density

Example Calculation

Let’s take an example for each shape to understand how the calculator works.

Example 1: Rectangular Pile

  • Length = 10 ft
  • Width = 5 ft
  • Height = 3 ft
  • Density = 100 lb/ft³

Volume:

Volume=10×5×3=150 ft3\text{Volume} = 10 \times 5 \times 3 = 150\ \text{ft}^3Volume=10×5×3=150 ft3

Weight:

Weight=150×100=15,000 lbs\text{Weight} = 150 \times 100 = 15,000\ \text{lbs}Weight=150×100=15,000 lbs

Example 2: Conical Pile

  • Radius = 4 ft
  • Height = 6 ft
  • Density = 100 lb/ft³

Volume:

Volume=13π(42)(6)=13π(16)(6)=13π(96)≈100.53 ft3\text{Volume} = \frac{1}{3} \pi (4^2)(6) = \frac{1}{3} \pi (16)(6) = \frac{1}{3} \pi (96) \approx 100.53\ \text{ft}^3Volume=31π(42)(6)=31π(16)(6)=31π(96)≈100.53 ft3

Weight:

Weight=100.53×100=10,053 lbs\text{Weight} = 100.53 \times 100 = 10,053\ \text{lbs}Weight=100.53×100=10,053 lbs

Example 3: Triangular Prism

  • Base Length = 6 ft
  • Triangle Height = 4 ft
  • Prism Length = 10 ft
  • Density = 100 lb/ft³

Volume:

Volume=12×6×4×10=12×240=120 ft3\text{Volume} = \frac{1}{2} \times 6 \times 4 \times 10 = \frac{1}{2} \times 240 = 120\ \text{ft}^3Volume=21×6×4×10=21×240=120 ft3

Weight:

Weight=120×100=12,000 lbs\text{Weight} = 120 \times 100 = 12,000\ \text{lbs}Weight=120×100=12,000 lbs

Final Notes

  • Make sure you’re using consistent units (typically feet and pounds).
  • The density of dirt can vary — common average: 100 lb/ft³ for loose soil.
  • Use the calculator to avoid over- or under-ordering dirt for your project.
