Decomposed granite (DG) is a popular and affordable material used for landscaping, pathways, patios, and garden beds. It’s crushed granite that compacts well and provides a natural look. To ensure you purchase the right amount, use this Decomposed Granite Calculator to estimate the required volume, weight, and total cost based on your project's dimensions.

Formula Used

1. Volume (in cubic yards)

To find the volume of decomposed granite required:

Formula:

Volume (cubic yards)=Length (ft)×Width (ft)×Depth (in)324\text{Volume (cubic yards)} = \frac{\text{Length (ft)} \times \text{Width (ft)} \times \text{Depth (in)}}{324}Volume (cubic yards)=324Length (ft)×Width (ft)×Depth (in)

Why 324? Because: 1 yard³ = 27 ft³ Depth (in inches) must be converted to feet

2. Weight (in tons)

Once we have the volume, we multiply it by the average density of decomposed granite.

Formula:

Weight (tons)=Volume (yd3)×1.35\text{Weight (tons)} = \text{Volume (yd}^3) \times 1.35Weight (tons)=Volume (yd3)×1.35

Average density of decomposed granite is 1.35 tons per cubic yard.

3. Total Cost

Formula:

Total Cost=Weight (tons)×Price per ton\text{Total Cost} = \text{Weight (tons)} \times \text{Price per ton}Total Cost=Weight (tons)×Price per ton

Example

Let’s say you are creating a DG pathway that is:

  • Length: 20 ft
  • Width: 6 ft
  • Depth: 3 inches
  • Price per ton: $45

Step 1: Calculate Volume

Volume=20×6×3324=360324≈1.11 yd3\text{Volume} = \frac{20 \times 6 \times 3}{324} = \frac{360}{324} \approx 1.11 \text{ yd}^3Volume=32420×6×3=324360≈1.11 yd3

Step 2: Calculate Weight

Weight=1.11×1.35≈1.50 tons\text{Weight} = 1.11 \times 1.35 \approx 1.50 \text{ tons}Weight=1.11×1.35≈1.50 tons

Step 3: Calculate Total Cost

Cost=1.50×45=67.5\text{Cost} = 1.50 \times 45 = 67.5Cost=1.50×45=67.5

✅ You’ll need approximately 1.5 tons of DG, which will cost around $67.50.

Final Thoughts

Using this calculator, you can avoid over- or under-purchasing decomposed granite. It’s especially helpful when you’re working on a budget or ordering in bulk.
