Getting your paint mix ratio wrong is one of the most costly mistakes in automotive, industrial, or professional painting. Too much hardener and the paint cures too fast. Too little thinner and you get orange peel texture. This guide explains exactly how to calculate paint component quantities using any ratio — 4:1, 2:1, 2:1:1, and more.

Understanding Paint Ratios

A paint ratio tells you the proportion of each component in the final mixed paint:

  1. 2-part ratio (e.g., 4:1) → Base Paint : Hardener
  2. 3-part ratio (e.g., 2:1:1) → Base Paint : Hardener : Thinner/Reducer

The ratio does not tell you the volume directly — it tells you the share of each part out of the total.

Formula 1 – Total Parts in the Ratio

First, add all ratio numbers to get the total number of parts:

Formula (2-part):

Formula 3 – Hardener Quantity
