When planning to build or renovate a driveway, one of the biggest decisions is choosing between asphalt and concrete. Both materials have advantages, but the cost often plays the most important role in decision-making.
To make things easier, you can use our Asphalt vs Concrete Driveway Cost Calculator, which helps estimate the cost of each option side by side. This way, you’ll know which material fits your budget better.
Formulas Used in the Calculator
1. Driveway Area
The first step is calculating the total area of the driveway:
Area=Length×Width
2. Asphalt Driveway Cost
The asphalt cost is calculated as:
Asphalt Cost=Area×(Asphalt Material Cost per sq. ft+Asphalt Labor Cost per sq. ft)
3. Concrete Driveway Cost
The concrete cost is calculated as:
Concrete Cost=Area×(Concrete Material Cost per sq. ft+Concrete Labor Cost per sq. ft)
4. Cost Difference
Finally, we calculate the difference:
Cost Difference=∣Concrete Cost−Asphalt Cost∣
Example Calculation
Let’s assume the following values:
- Driveway Length = 40 ft
- Driveway Width = 12 ft
- Asphalt Material Cost = $2.50/sq. ft
- Asphalt Labor Cost = $1.50/sq. ft
- Concrete Material Cost = $4.00/sq. ft
- Concrete Labor Cost = $2.00/sq. ft
Step 1: Area
Area=40×12=480sq. ft
Step 2: Asphalt Cost
Asphalt Cost=480×(2.50+1.50)=480×4.00=1920USD
Step 3: Concrete Cost
Concrete Cost=480×(4.00+2.00)=480×6.00=2880USD
Step 4: Cost Difference
Cost Difference=∣2880−1920∣=960USD
✅ Asphalt driveway will cost $1,920
✅ Concrete driveway will cost $2,880
✅ Concrete is $960 more expensive than asphalt for the same driveway size.
