Formula

The calculation is performed in four steps.

Step 1: Calculate Total Column Volume

First, calculate the volume of one column:

Vcolumn=W×L×HV_{column} = W \times L \times HVcolumn​=W×L×H

Where:

  • (WWW) = Column Width
  • (LLL) = Column Length
  • (HHH) = Column Height

For multiple columns:

Vtotal=N×VcolumnV_{total} = N \times V_{column}Vtotal​=N×Vcolumn​

Where:

  • (NNN) = Number of Columns

Step 2: Calculate Brick Volume Including Mortar

The effective brick dimensions become:

Lb=BrickLength+MortarThicknessL_b = BrickLength + MortarThicknessLb​=BrickLength+MortarThickness

Wb=BrickWidth+MortarThicknessW_b = BrickWidth + MortarThicknessWb​=BrickWidth+MortarThickness

Hb=BrickHeight+MortarThicknessH_b = BrickHeight + MortarThicknessHb​=BrickHeight+MortarThickness

Effective brick volume:

Vbrick=Lb×Wb×HbV_{brick} = L_b \times W_b \times H_bVbrick​=Lb​×Wb​×Hb​

Step 3: Calculate Number of Bricks

Bricks=VtotalVbrickBricks = \frac{V_{total}}{V_{brick}}Bricks=Vbrick​Vtotal​​

Step 4: Add Waste Factor

FinalBricks=Bricks×(1+Waste100)FinalBricks = Bricks \times \left(1 + \frac{Waste}{100}\right)FinalBricks=Bricks×(1+100Waste​)

Round the final result up to the nearest whole brick.

Number of Columns: 4

Column Width:16 in

Column Length:16 in

Column Height: 96 in

Brick Size: 8 × 4 × 2.25 in

Mortar Joint Thickness: 0.375 in

Waste Factor:10%

Effective brick dimensions:

Step 3: Number of Bricks

Step 4: Add Waste Factor
