A Gable Roof Area Calculator helps you estimate the total surface area of a gable roof using the roof length, roof width, and roof pitch. It is useful for estimating shingles, metal panels, underlayment, insulation, paint, and other roofing materials.

A gable roof has two sloping roof surfaces that meet at a central ridge. The calculator accounts for roof pitch, which increases the actual roof surface area compared with the flat building footprint.

What Is a Gable Roof?

A gable roof has two sloping sides that meet at the highest point of the roof, called the ridge. The triangular wall section at each end is called the gable.

To calculate the roof area, you need:

  1. Roof length
  2. Roof width
  3. Roof pitch

How to Use the Gable Roof Area Calculator

Step 1: Enter Roof Length

Enter the roof length from one end of the building to the other, along the ridge.

Step 2: Enter Roof Width

Enter the total horizontal roof width from one eave to the other.

Step 3: Enter Roof Pitch

Enter the roof pitch in rise-over-run format. For example, a 4:12 pitch rises 4 units for every 12 horizontal units.

Step 4: View the Results

The calculator estimates:

  1. Roof slope multiplier
  2. Rafter length
  3. Ridge length
  4. Roof angle
  5. Total gable roof area

Calculate the Slope Multiplier

The slope multiplier adjusts the flat roof area to account for the roof pitch.

Slope Multiplier=1+(Pitch12)2\text{Slope Multiplier} = \sqrt{1 + \left(\frac{\text{Pitch}}{12}\right)^2}Slope Multiplier=1+(12Pitch)2

Calculate Total Gable Roof Area

Multiply the roof length, roof width, and slope multiplier.

Total Roof Area=Roof Length×Roof Width×Slope Multiplier\text{Total Roof Area} = \text{Roof Length} \times \text{Roof Width} \times \text{Slope Multiplier}Total Roof Area=Roof Length×Roof Width×Slope Multiplier

This formula includes both sloping sides of the gable roof.

Calculate the Roof Run and Rise

The run is half of the total roof width.

Run=Roof Width2\text{Run} = \frac{\text{Roof Width}}{2}Run=2Roof Width

The rise is calculated from the roof pitch.

Rise=Run×Pitch12\text{Rise} = \text{Run} \times \frac{\text{Pitch}}{12}Rise=Run×12Pitch

Calculate Rafter Length

The rafter length is the diagonal distance from the roof edge to the ridge.

Rafter Length=Run2+Rise2\text{Rafter Length} = \sqrt{\text{Run}^{2} + \text{Rise}^{2}}Rafter Length=Run2+Rise2

Calculate Ridge Length

For a standard gable roof, the ridge length is equal to the roof length.

Ridge Length=Roof Length\text{Ridge Length} = \text{Roof Length}Ridge Length=Roof Length

Calculate Roof Angle

The roof angle is calculated from the rise and run.

Roof Angle=tan⁡−1(RiseRun)×180π\text{Roof Angle} = \tan^{-1}\left(\frac{\text{Rise}}{\text{Run}}\right) \times \frac{180}{\pi}Roof Angle=tan−1(RunRise)×π180

Example Calculation

Suppose a gable roof has the following dimensions:

  1. Roof length: 20 feet
  2. Roof width: 10 feet
  3. Roof pitch: 4:12

Step 1: Calculate the Slope Multiplier

Slope Multiplier=1+(412)2\text{Slope Multiplier} = \sqrt{1 + \left(\frac{4}{12}\right)^2}Slope Multiplier=1+(124)2

Slope Multiplier=1.0541\text{Slope Multiplier} = 1.0541Slope Multiplier=1.0541

Step 2: Calculate Total Roof Area

Total Roof Area=20 ft×10 ft×1.0541\text{Total Roof Area} = 20\text{ ft} \times 10\text{ ft} \times 1.0541Total Roof Area=20 ft×10 ft×1.0541

Total Roof Area=210.82 ft2\text{Total Roof Area} = 210.82\text{ ft}^{2}Total Roof Area=210.82 ft2

The estimated gable roof area is 210.82 square feet.

Step 3: Calculate Rafter Length

Run=10 ft2=5 ft\text{Run} = \frac{10\text{ ft}}{2} = 5\text{ ft}Run=210 ft=5 ft

Rise=5×412=1.67 ft\text{Rise} = 5 \times \frac{4}{12} = 1.67\text{ ft}Rise=5×124=1.67 ft

Rafter Length=52+1.672=5.27 ft\text{Rafter Length} = \sqrt{5^{2} + 1.67^{2}} = 5.27\text{ ft}Rafter Length=52+1.672=5.27 ft

Important Planning Notes

  1. Use the same measurement unit for roof length and roof width.
  2. Enter the pitch as the rise value in a rise-over-12 format.
  3. Include roof overhangs in the roof length and width if you want them included in the material estimate.
  4. Add extra material for overlaps, cuts, ridge caps, valleys, flashings, waste, and repairs.
  5. Use final roof drawings and manufacturer coverage information when ordering materials.
  6. Consult a qualified professional for structural roof design.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a gable roof?

A gable roof has two sloping roof surfaces that meet at a central ridge. It creates triangular gable sections at the ends of the building.

How do I calculate the area of a gable roof?

Multiply the roof length by the roof width and the slope multiplier.

Total Roof Area=Roof Length×Roof Width×Slope Multiplier\text{Total Roof Area} = \text{Roof Length} \times \text{Roof Width} \times \text{Slope Multiplier}Total Roof Area=Roof Length×Roof Width×Slope Multiplier

Why is the gable roof area larger than the building footprint?

The roof surfaces are sloped, so they cover more area than a flat horizontal surface with the same length and width.

What does a 4:12 roof pitch mean?

A 4:12 pitch means the roof rises 4 units vertically for every 12 units of horizontal run.

Does this calculator include roof overhangs?

Include the overhang in the roof length and roof width if you want it included in the calculated roof area.

Is ridge length the same as roof length?

For a standard gable roof, the ridge length is usually the same as the roof length. Complex roof designs may differ.

Does the calculator include material waste?

No. Add extra material for cutting, overlaps, flashings, ridge caps, damaged pieces, and normal installation waste.
